What could LED tennis court lighting save your club? The answer depends on the existing system, the proposed design and how often you use the courts. Compare annual energy use and the full upgrade cost before relying on a savings percentage.
Calculate your current energy use
Record the total electrical input of the existing lighting, including control gear where applicable. Use reliable technical data or measured consumption. Multiply the total input in kilowatts by the hours the lights run each year to estimate annual kilowatt-hours.
Compare the proposed system
Repeat the calculation using the proposed LED system. Use a design suitable for the intended court use, rather than comparing wattages without checking the lighting outcome. If different courts operate independently, calculate their hours separately.
A simple example
Suppose an existing installation uses 6 kW and a proposed system uses 3 kW, both operating for 1,500 hours a year. The difference is 4,500 kWh annually. At an electricity price of €0.25 per kWh, that would be €1,125 in annual energy savings.
These figures illustrate the calculation only. They are not a specification, a quote or a forecast for your tennis courts.
Include all project costs
Add equipment, delivery, installation, access equipment and any necessary electrical or pole work. Divide the total investment by the estimated annual saving to calculate simple payback. For example, an illustrative €9,000 investment divided by €1,125 annual savings gives eight years.
Use a consistent VAT basis appropriate to your business. Simple payback excludes financing and future changes in energy prices. Include maintenance savings only when you have a reasonable basis for estimating them.
Use your actual operating pattern
Account for seasonal use, opening hours and the number of courts lit at once. If the proposed equipment supports suitable controls, ask for a separate estimate based on realistic operating settings. Avoid assuming every court runs at full output throughout all opening hours.
