Badminton LED lighting: check ceiling height and obstructions first

Indoor badminton hall with blue courts, nets and overhead lighting

Before replacing badminton hall lights, look above the court. Roof beams, ventilation ducts, curtains and suspended equipment can affect where luminaires fit and how they illuminate the playing space. A floor plan alone does not show these constraints.

Measure clear height, not just roof height

The highest point of the roof is not necessarily the usable clearance over the court. Record the lowest relevant obstruction and its position. Ask the facility designer which clear-height requirements apply to the intended level of play; do not assume one minimum works for every hall and competition.

The Badminton England design guide is a useful sport-specific reference. Confirm current project and competition requirements separately, particularly when adapting an existing building.

Prepare an overhead survey

  • Mark court boundaries and roof beams on the same drawing.
  • Locate ducts, basketball structures, divider curtains and stored equipment.
  • Record existing luminaire positions and mounting heights.
  • Show where curtains or equipment move during other activities.
  • Include photographs looking upward from both ends of each court.

A layout should work in its normal badminton configuration. Equipment moved after the survey can create new obstructions, so agree what will be parked or retracted during play.

Do not lower fixtures simply to gain illuminance

A lower suspension position changes clearance, sightlines and light distribution. Ask the lighting designer to assess those effects together. Increasing wattage or lowering a fitting is not a substitute for a layout that accounts for players looking up at the shuttle.

Confirm the fixing and maintenance method

Use approved attachment points and a suitable mounting system. Have the building's responsible specialist confirm the supporting structure rather than assuming an old fixing can be reused. Plan how a technician will reach the luminaire without damaging the sports floor or relying on improvised access.

Brief the supplier with one coordinated drawing

Send the hall dimensions, clear-height measurements, overhead survey and intended use together. The AXION 2000 indoor fixture can be considered within a project-specific design. Contact Global LED Lights with your hall information so fixture positions, mounting details and the lighting calculation can be assessed together before ordering.
