Good badminton lighting makes the shuttle easier to follow without placing distracting bright sources in a player’s line of sight. For a club upgrading to LED, the layout deserves as much attention as the fixture specification. Start with the hall, the playing standard and the existing installation before deciding how many lights to order.
Why badminton needs a court-specific lighting plan
Players look upwards for clears, lifts and overhead shots. A bright fixture that seems comfortable when you stand at the entrance may be distracting from a service position or the rear court. Review the proposed light positions from the players’ perspective, including the direction they face during play.
The badminton design guidance hosted by Badminton England discusses lighting alongside the hall’s visual environment and glare. Use sport-specific guidance when briefing the designer, and confirm the current requirements for your intended level of play.
What should you check besides lux?
- Uniformity: ask how evenly the light is distributed, not just the average reading.
- Glare and placement: review fixture positions against the court lines and likely viewing directions.
- Hall surfaces: record wall and ceiling colours, windows and daylight conditions for the design.
- Mounting height: provide the actual suspension height, not only the height of the roof apex.
- Shared use: tell the designer if tennis, badminton or other activities use the same hall.
A high lumen figure describes light output from a fixture. It does not tell you how much useful light reaches the court or how comfortable that light will be for players.
AXION 2000: an example badminton layout
Our AXION 2000 indoor tennis and badminton fixture uses 72 W, has a 5000 K colour temperature and an opal diffuser. The supplied badminton design is labelled 450 lx and uses eight fixtures per court.
That is a design example, not a universal eight-lamp rule or a guarantee of competition compliance. The final quantity and positions need to suit your hall. An opal diffuser also does not remove the need to assess glare.

How much does the example installation cost?
At €350 per AXION 2000 fixture, eight fixtures give a €2,800 fixture budget per court, excluding VAT, transport and installation. Check the product page for current pricing. Cabling, suspension components, access equipment and electrical work should be included separately in your project quotation.
The connected fixture load is 8 × 72 W = 576 W, or 0.576 kW. At an illustrative 1,500 lighting hours a year and €0.25/kWh, that is 864 kWh and €216 per year. Your actual tariff and operating hours will differ; use figures on a consistent VAT basis.
How do you estimate savings from your existing lights?
Record the total electrical input of the current installation, including any control-gear losses, and multiply it by annual operating hours. Subtract the proposed installation’s annual use, then multiply the difference by your electricity price.
Compare designs that deliver the required playing conditions. Replacing too many lamps with too few may reduce electricity use while giving an unsuitable court. For payback, divide the complete upgrade cost by the annual saving, allowing for any separately evidenced maintenance savings.
Can the existing wiring and suspension be reused?
Have the installer inspect them. AXION 2000 is a 1,984 mm linear fixture, so support positions and access matter. The listed driver is On/Off: do not assume that an existing dimmer or control system is compatible. If you need court-by-court switching, describe it before the installation is designed.
What to send for a badminton lighting quotation
Send the number of courts, a dimensioned hall plan, ceiling and mounting heights, photos of the current lights, their quantity and power, your operating hours and intended playing standard. Include any complaints about glare or dark areas so the new layout can address the actual problem.
Global LED Lights supplies the fixtures. Lighting planning and installation can be quoted separately through Global Squash.
